![]() There's little dialogue in the game, with most of it playing out via speech bubbles, but when the narrator does speak it's incredibly effective. I nearly die to a pack of bears while staring up at the brushed concrete of an abandoned church, and I accidentally walked straight into a firefight because an entrancing, glowing mass sat at the center of an area and I just had to know what it was. Visually, it's somewhat reminiscent of West of Dead, with a slightly cell-shaded vibe that doesn't skimp on the details. ![]() Weird West is like nothing I've played recently in both gameplay and style. All five protagonists' paths will come together in the final chapter, and I'll even be able to take the previous protagonist along on some of my journeys, although now I will certainly do that with more caution, considering what happened to my last bodyguard. Although I don't finish Jane Bell's main questline during my initial playthrough, Weird West will lead you through four other people's journeys – and everything I did during my time as Bell will permanently affect the world for the next protagonist. The environment remembers your every move, remaining the same even after you've died – and beyond. He was a bodyguard whose name I can't remember, but he was also someone's family, and Weird West wants you to keep that in mind. Later, as I'm strolling back through Grackle in search of more bounties, a bit of dialogue pops up over the head of a villager lamenting his death. "Oh shit," I mumble before digging through his pockets for coin and trinkets, thinking nothing else of the man who just died to protect me. He holds his own against Jessica Miller's gang for the entire battle, landing some important shots on a bad guy who was trying to flank me, but stumbles into a fire I started by smashing an oil lamp and dies at my feet. He offers to act as my bodyguard for a fee, so I decide to bring him along on a bounty mission. Early on, I gain a fair bit of coin by rifling through the pockets of my fallen foes and happen upon a man leaning up against the outside of a saloon. The world of Weird West is dangerous and dire, and everything you do affects it.

Like it or not, energy is still what everyone who's anyone wants to get their hands on. And never reading the words "Afghanistan" and "oil" in the same sentence is still a source of endless amusement for me. ("Why? There's nothing there.") Entering the Space Odyssey-style map room at the Russian energy giant Gazprom's headquarters in Moscow - which digitally details every single pipeline in Eurasia - or the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC)'s corporate HQ in Tehran, with its neat rows of female experts in full chador, was my equivalent of entering Aladdin's cave. In Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan (before it was moved to Astana, in the middle of the middle of nowhere) the locals were puzzled when I expressed an overwhelming urge to drive to that country's oil boomtown Aktau. ![]() I used to avidly follow the adventures of that once-but-not-future Sun-King of Central Asia, the now deceased Turkmenbashi or "leader of the Turkmen", Saparmurat Niyazov, head of the immensely gas-rich Republic of Turkmenistan, as if he were a Conradian hero. I've also trekked various of the overlapping modern Silk Roads, or perhaps Silk Pipelines, of possible future energy flows from Shanghai to Istanbul, annotating my own do-it-yourself routes for LNG (liquefied natural gas). (Oh, by the way, the map of Pipelineistan is chicken-scratched with acronyms, so get used to them!) I've crossed the Caspian in an Azeri cargo ship just to follow the $4 billion Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan pipeline, better known in this chess game by its acronym, BTC, through the Caucasus. Since the second half of the 1990s, I've been hooked on pipelines. Think of it, geographically, as Pipelineistan.Īll geopolitical junkies need a fix. ![]() ![]() Put another way, if its crucial embattled frontier these days is the Caspian Basin, the whole of Eurasia is its chessboard. I like to think of it as the Liquid War, because its bloodstream is the pipelines that crisscross the potential imperial battlefields of the planet. Our good ol' friend the nonsensical " global war on terror", which the Pentagon has slyly re branded "the Long War", sports a far more important, if half-hidden, twin - a global energy war. Ma- What happens on the immense battlefield for the control of Eurasia will provide the ultimate plot line in the tumultuous rush towards a new, polycentric world order, also known as the New Great Game. The highly customizable browser includes other intriguing features such as a built-in screenshot tool and a Night Mode that turns web pages black with white text to save your eyes during late-night web reading. Like Opera, Maxthon includes a customizable left button rail for notes, favorites, RSS feeds, and so forth. Maxthon ditched its cloud storage ambitions and is now just a regular browser. Newer additions to the browser's toolset include synchronizable notes, a password saver, and built-in screenshot capabilities, though you can find those in other browsers. Another standout option, Split Screen, has been slow to appear in standard browsers like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. If less is more for you, then Colibri is your browser. Colibri blocks third-party trackers, ads, and malicious hosts, but don't expect extensions or other extras. The Toggle view shows your pinned site links in tiles for easy access. Instead of opening sites in new tabs, you get a choice of a new window or replacing the current window's contents. When you log in, your saved links, lists, and feeds appear. It shows just six buttons at the top: Back, Forward, Reload, Add to Links, Web Search, and Toggle View. Several browsers included here let you install plugins that block all ads and tracking. Google has announced that even effective ad-blocking extensions won’t fully work in the future. Perhaps of greatest importance is that Chrome’s built-in ad blocker doesn’t offer true ad blocking and privacy-only ad blocking that permits its own ad network to function unimpeded. This mode lets you read a news article in a cleaned-up view without all the screaming clutter that adorns today’s web pages (present company included). ![]() For example, Chrome offers no reading mode, which you find in many of the alternatives included here. The all-but-certain influence of our final defeat in Afghanistan on Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine was just one link in a long chain of consequences forged by the Iraq war. It’s now clear that not just the war alone but its ever-spreading secondary consequences - which included our futile overinvestment in Afghanistan, fatefully cast as the “good war” by many Democrats opposed to the Iraq invasion - kept us tied us down during critical years of geopolitical realignment, making it hard to even think about, let alone cope with the revival of Russian power and the rise of China to superpower status. ![]() ![]() Bush’s platform in 2000, before he traded his humble foreign policy for a grand crusade.īut it is in the effect on America’s global position that the costs of the Iraq war really keep compounding. ungovernable and incapable of governing.Īnd there is a special irony that even with the intellectual ferment on the Trump-era right, the attempts to forge a “national conservatism” or a socially conservative populism, sometimes look like efforts to grope backward to George W. Ever since the war discredited both neoconservatism specifically and the Republican establishment generally, nobody has been able to maintain a successful counterweight to the various forms of right-wing populism, Tea Party and Trumpian, that have made the G.O.P. Ever since the war discredited and helped dissolve the hawkish center-left, nobody has been able to reconstitute a strong centrist faction within liberalism, with the result that liberal institutions have been pulled ever leftward since 2004. In our political coalitions, these disillusioning effects look even more substantial and permanent than they appeared in 2010 or 2015. Its lingering effects have made the body politic more susceptible to left-wing radicalism and right-wing demagogy, while contributing to a persistent mood of pessimism and disappointment that’s then been exacerbated by other forces (social media, the coronavirus pandemic). The war’s influence has percolated inside other social crises, like the opioid epidemic, that have become more visible and destructive over time. In American domestic life the Vietnam effect was more of a fever, whereas the Iraq effect seems like a wasting or relapsing disease. As a squandering of blood and treasure and moral credibility, but one whose overarching strategic costs were not so great.īut today there’s a stronger case for seeing Iraq as a more epochal disaster. As a bad war, but not an era-defining one. When Barack Obama was elected president, American conservatism seemed shattered by Iraq, as American liberalism was shattered by Vietnam, but by his second term there was a return to ideological stalemate.Īt various times, then - at the 10th anniversary of the war, maybe even at the 15th - it was possible to imagine a long-term future where Iraq was ultimately remembered more like our bloody counterinsurgency in the Philippines at the dawn of the 20th century than like the trauma of Vietnam. The immediate aftermath of Iraq was sour and paranoid in its own way, but even with the Great Recession there wasn’t the same kind of radicalism and social breakdown. ![]() The United States lost the Vietnam War completely in Iraq we left behind an unsteady and corrupt republic rather than a new dictatorship, with a government that still allows an American military presence.ĭomestically, the period around the Vietnam War was dreadful - a wave of domestic terrorism, a crisis of authority, the 1960s curdling into the 1970s. The bloodletting among Iraqis was terrible, but so was the civilian toll in Southeast Asia. More than 12 times as many American troops died in the Vietnam War as died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and its aftermath. This makes it a useful moment to compare the two conflicts and their effects, and to consider - provisionally, always provisionally - which was more disastrous, which intervention deserves to be remembered as the worst foreign policy decision in our history.įor some time, even after my own initial support for the war dissolved and its folly became obvious, I doubted that Iraq could outstrip Vietnam in the ranks of American debacles. At the 20th anniversary of the Iraq war, we stand in the same position relative to the initial invasion as America stood in 1985 relative to the 1965 arrival of our first combat troops in Vietnam. ![]() Testimonials & Customer References to decide if this is the right business software or service for your company : No reference … Awards & Recognitions This cloud software is used in the sectors : Services … Customer References This web-based application is recommended for trades : Professional … This software package is tailored to business needs : SME … Training options : … Industry & Customers Who use Barcode Maker ?
